Capital of Catalonia, Capital of Culture

Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, a proudly autonomous region that can boast icons like Miró and Gaudí alongside a late-night party atmosphere and a contradictory tranquil tangle of lanes.

Capital of Catalonia, Capital of Culture

Whether you’re soaking up rays or culture, nightlife or the quiet life, Barcelona’s Gothic streets offer an unforgettable experience for everyone. We know the biggest race on the planet will light up any city, but what can Barcelona offer outside of the spectacle in yellow? Let’s spend the weekend…

Arrival

Mid-afternoon in Spain is a great time to soak up the laid back atmosphere and welcoming hospitality. Old school restaurants like Mantequerías Pirenaicas are ideal for a long, languid immersion into Catalan cuisine. The proliferation of high quality local tapas on offer throughout the city will set your day up nicely.

In the evening as the temperature falls ever so slightly, you can take in the city’s rich culture; a walking tour of Gaudi buildings, the Picasso museum or some Miro. The Moco Museum features more contemporary art from the likes of Basquiat, Hirst and Banksy, for those with a real thirst for art.

By now you’ll have worked up an appetite again, in time for a late dinner. The relaxed atmosphere of Suculent is where to go for some of the city’s best Catalan cooking, or try any of the countless pinotxo bars or fine dining restaurants you’ll stumble over on an evening walk.

SETTLING IN

With your bearings gathered and suitably immersed in Barcelona life, it’s time for an early breakfast and a trip to the Boqueria market. Take coffee and xuixo, a Catalan pastry or start the day with local pinotxo and a naughty cava!

The middle of the day is a good time to visit the shops, of which there are many. From the likes of Madre, David Valls and Apres Ski to the Sant Antoni market; a temple to local ingredients with a weekly book market outside its stunning exterior.

If you have any energy after a day of cycling and race viewing, the evening can offer fun until late! We wouldn’t recommend too many late nights, but one wouldn’t hurt. You’ll find cocktail bars, relaxed bars and even nightclubs for those in the mood for dancing. Especiarium Bar celebrates the art of mixology inspired by the fascinating world of spices. Housemade syrups and ferments and served in witty vessels, like the Japanese gin-and-matcha blend that comes in a mug shaped like an origami bird. Delicious!

Barcelona's vibrant cycling life

Squeezing in one more

If you have any spare time left to fill after the daily itinerary, you must pay a visit to church. The Basilica de la Sagrada Família is stunning example of Gaudi’s incredible imagination that is a sight to beyond both outside and in. Go for mass, or simply to enjoy the masonry and then head to the beach to worship the sun!

Whilst your daily trip itinerary will be more than filled with exciting cycling activities, it’s clear that Barcelona has much to offer besides. Whether you squeeze as much as possible into or week or bookend a trip with a stay, the Catalan capital is a worthy destination.
