21 switchbacks to Alpe d'Huez
Today is your opportunity to test yourself on the most famous of all climbs – the 21 switchbacks that lead to Alpe d’Huez!
You’ll start the day by descending the famous 21 switchbacks to Bourg d’Oisans. Stop in Bourg d’Oisans to visit the local bike shop which has a great range of Alpe d’Huez cycling clothes and merchandise. Enjoy a coffee in the main square of this cycling-passionate town then head out to conquer this most famous of all cycling climbs.
21 switchbacks to Alpe d'Huez
Today is your opportunity to test yourself on the most famous of all climbs – the 21 switchbacks that lead to Alpe d’Huez!
The ride starts with a 28km descent to the town of Bourg d’Oisans, the start of the climb to Alpe d’Huez. This time round you’ll only climb the first 3km of the climb before turning off in La Garde onto one of the most spectacular roads in the Alps: the panoramic road to Le Freney..
From Le Freney, you’ll ride back down the valley to Bourg d’Oisans. This time you’ll climb all of the iconic 21 switchbacks to Alpe d’Huez.
On reaching the summit, the ride continues with “the balcony”, an incredible route perched high on a ridge with some of the most impressive views in the Alps. Your final climb of the day takes you back to Alpe d’Huez over the stunning Col de Sarenne, a remote, narrow road that climbs to 2000m before dropping down into Alpe d’Huez.
Hiking around Alpe d'Huez
Alpe d’Huez has 143 miles of marked hiking trails and 12 lakes within walking distance from your hotel – and it would be a shame not to get out there and discover the natural paradise that surrounds the town. Your guide will prepare a hike that suits everyone’s abilities.

Pas de la Confession
Your longest ride of the trip so far, with a total distance of 44 km and 1281m of elevation gain. The ride starts easy enough with the 14km descent to Bourg d’Oisans. However, this time you won’t stop in Bourg d’Oisans – you’ll continue along the valley floor for a further 8km to Rochetaillée.
In Rochetaillée you’ll take a right turn and start the beautiful climb to Pas de la Confession, the back-way into Alpe d’Huez. Enjoy the spectacular views of the valley floor, 800m below the panoramic road that leads to Pas de la Confession.
Telegraphe and Galibier!
A major challenge today with the Col de Telegraphe and the iconic Col du Galibier on the agenda. Both climbs are classified as “Hors-Categorie” meaning their above category, a French way of saying they’re damn hard.
You’ll start the day with a van transfer to the Col de la Croix de Fer where you’ll jump on the bike and descend to the Col du Glandon. From the Glandon enjoy the long descent to the Maurienne Valley and one of the most remarkable climbs in the Alps, the Lacets de Montvernier, with its 18 switchbacks crammed into just 3km. From Les Lacets, a short ride along the valley will bring you to St Michel de Maurienne, the start of the iconic Col de Telegaphe and Col du Galibier. The summit of the Galibier lies 35km ahead at 2645m (8678ft), the highest elevation you’ll reach during the trip.

Climbs
Stage 12
Auch > Hautacam
Any day the Tour tackles the Pyrenees is always going to be significant. The battle between the favourites for the overall title will have greater magnitude today, particularly over the final 45 kilometres when the peloton initially tackles the Col du Soulor via Ferrières (11.9km at 7.3%), before advancing to the Col de Bordères. Then comes a real moment of truth in the shape of the 13.6km climb to Hautacam, where the gradient averages 7.8%.
Stage 13
Loudenvielle > Peyragudes
The Peyragudes climb has developed quite a reputation, particularly the final few hundred metres that give access to the altiport, where the Tour favourites have been scattered as they make their very last effort up to the line. Always formidable, there won’t be the slightest opportunity for any respite in this time trial up this steep ascent. The riders will have barely two kilometres to gain momentum before they’re onto the climb of the Peyresourde.
Stage 14
Pau > Superbagnères
The route today is modelled on the stage from the 1986 edition, which also took place on the 14th day of racing. The ascent to the Tourmalet via Luz-Saint-Sauveur (19km at 7.4%) is the least travelled by the Tour, as is the case for the route to the Col d’Aspin via Payolle (5km at 7.6%). However, this stage is essentially all about the race’s reunion with the ultra-demanding climb to Superbagnères (12.4km, 7.5%), where the changes in gradient is likely to trigger a pitched battle between the favourites.
Stage 15
Muret > Carcassonne
The road to Carcassonne often favours the sprinters, but 2,400 metres of vertical gain in less than 170 kilometres could encourage the breakaway specialists. The Côte de Saint-Ferréol on the road out of Revel and then the Pas du Sant (2.9km at 10%) could well provide them with the perfect opportunity to eliminate their rivals. After that, there’s 40 kilometres of gentle descent into the medieval city, with the possibility of a strong crosswind too!
Stage
Rest Day: Montpellier
Stage 16
Montpellier > Mont Ventoux
The unusual geographical configuration of the “Giant of Provence” often makes it the only difficulty of the day. The route is quite straightforward to begin with, crossing the departments of Hérault, Gard and Vaucluse. Here, the riders will reach the road where the contest between the favourites could become a demonstration. Between the village of Bédoin and the observatory overlooking the finish line there are 15.7km of ascent, averaging 8.7%... and chances to attack at absolutely every point.
Stage 17
Bollène > Valence
There’s no such thing as an absolutely flat stage on the roads of the Vaucluse and Drôme, but there’s definitely an opportunity here for the sprinters and that will mean the breakaway riders won’t get much room for manoeuvre. If the wind starts to blow, as is often the case in this area, and there’s an attempt to create echelons there could be a dramatic twist. There’ll be real tension at every change of direction over the final 50 kilometres.
Stage 18
Vif > Col de la Loze
The stats don’t lie: this is the most demanding stage of the 2025 Tour, with 5,500 metres of vertical gain. Much of this total will come on the climbs to the Col du Glandon and then the Col de la Madeleine, where the riders will reach 2,000 metres for the first time today. Then they’ll hit the heights again above Courchevel to reach the Col de la Loze, tackling the pass for the first time from this flank. After passing through the altiport, the final four kilometres are on a cycle track where the gradient is just as irregular and almost as hard on the legs as the route taken in 2020 and 2023.
Stage 19
Albertville > La Plagne
The ultra-mountainous tone of this stage, which features five climbs, is amplified by its relative shortness. The first of those climbs, the Côte d’Héry-sur-Ugine, arrives around ten kilometres after the stage start. Thanks to the spicy nature of what’s gone before, the final 19.1-kilometre ascent to La Plagne will seem all the more interminable.
Stage 20
Nantua > Pontarlier
At this stage of the Tour, there’ll still be some in-form riders who haven’t yet managed to claim a victory bouquet. They’ll all be keen to get into the breakaway, but the selection process will be tough, thanks especially to the ascent of the Col de la Croix de la Serra. The hilly profile of the final third of the stage will give the strongest riders the chance to break away and finish solo or in a small group in the capital of absinthe.
Stage 21
Mantes-la-Ville > Paris Champs Elysées
A return to both tradition and to the Champs-Élysées... After Nice stepped in for the capital during the Olympics last summer, the Tour will return to Paris. And we’ll be celebrating the 50th anniversary of both the first finish on the Champs-Élysées and Bernard Thévenet’s first overall victory. That was in 1975. Happy anniversary!
