Col d'Aspin
Your first big ride in the Pyrenees and we’ve picked the legendary Tour de France climb, the stunning Col d’Aspin, as your first test. The Aspin was the favorite climb of Thomson Bike Tours co-founder, the late Paul Rogen – and Paul never missed an opportunity to ride this climb whenever he left his home in Connecticut for a trip in the Pyrenees!
You’ll ride from the hotel and enjoy a 15km warm-up before reaching the town of Arreau where you’ll start the climb to the Aspin. Enjoy the ride and don’t forget to stop along the way to marvel at the highest peaks in the Pyrenees off to your left as you’re climbing!
Port de Balès (Chaingate)
First big ride in the Pyrenees and we kick things off with one of our favorite Pyreneeen climbs. The Port de Bales was first introduced to the Tour de France in 2007 when a gravel forestry trail was asphalted allowing a connection between two valleys. It’s probably best remembered for the “chaingate” incident in 2010 when Alberto Contador attacked Andy Schleck after Andy had dropped his chain.
Stunning scenery, no traffic, great pavement, fantastic views from the summit, and on a par with the Tourmalet in terms of difficulty all combine to make the Port de Bales one of our all-time favorite climbs. It’s a long ride so our staff will advance you 50km in the vans, to the village of St Bertrand de Comminges. From St Bertrand you’ll have a 10km warm-up before reaching Mauleon-Barousse and the start of the climb. From the summit, enjoy the great descent before the final climb of your trip, the iconic Col de Peyresourde.

Ainsa visit
Our hotel in St Lary is very close to Spain and today we’ve organised a day-trip over the border into Spain to visit the beautiful town of Ainsa. Sitting on a hill-top above the new town, the medieval town is a real gem to visit. Enjoy tapas and a glass of wine in the Plaza Major which dates back to the 12th century, then discover Ainsa’s narrow medieval streets on a walk around the old town.

The Tourmalet
Today’s your chance to ride the most famous of all Pyreneen climbs – the legendary Col du Tourmalet.
After breakfast you’ll jump in one of our support vans for a short, 30-minute transfer to the Hourquette d’Ancizan where you’ll start the ride. The descent through the vast prairies that surround the Hourquette is one of the prettiest rides in the Pyrenees. The village of Sainte Marie de Campan signals the start of the climb to the Tourmalet. The summit lies 17km ahead at an altitude of 2115m. Bon courage!
The Tourmalet
Today’s your chance to ride the most famous of all Pyreneen climbs – the legendary Col du Tourmalet.
Setting out from the hotel your first challenge is in the form of the Cat.1 Hourquette d’Ancizan. The descent of the Hourquette takes you to Ste Marie de Campan and the start of the Tourmalet. Enjoy a snack at the famous cafe on the summit before heading back down to Ste Marie and the start of the magnificent ride over the Col d’Aspin and back to your hotel in St Lary Soulan.

Climbs
Stage 10
Ennezat > Le Mont-Dore
A mountain stage on Bastille Day, and one that’s likely to create some fireworks as there are seven second-category hills or passes on the menu. Anyone who missed the 2023 Tour will be able to catch a glimpse of the climb to the Puy de Dôme, as the riders will tackle the first few kilometres of it early in the stage. After that, there’ll be no respite until the final climb to the resort of Le Mont-Dore. The 3.5km climb averaging 8% will bring the total vertical gain for the day to 4,400 metres!
Stage
Rest Day: Toulouse
Stage 11
Toulouse > Toulouse
The teams banking on a bunch sprint won’t be hampered by any hilly terrain as they focus on their mission for the day. Vigilance will be required at the end of the stage due to the changes in direction that could be exploited if there’s a strong wind blowing. However, “Avenue Cavendish” is one of those finish straights that’s ideally suited to a contest between the peloton’s most renowned thoroughbreds.
Stage 12
Auch > Hautacam
Any day the Tour tackles the Pyrenees is always going to be significant. The battle between the favourites for the overall title will have greater magnitude today, particularly over the final 45 kilometres when the peloton initially tackles the Col du Soulor via Ferrières (11.9km at 7.3%), before advancing to the Col de Bordères. Then comes a real moment of truth in the shape of the 13.6km climb to Hautacam, where the gradient averages 7.8%.
Stage 13
Loudenvielle > Peyragudes
The Peyragudes climb has developed quite a reputation, particularly the final few hundred metres that give access to the altiport, where the Tour favourites have been scattered as they make their very last effort up to the line. Always formidable, there won’t be the slightest opportunity for any respite in this time trial up this steep ascent. The riders will have barely two kilometres to gain momentum before they’re onto the climb of the Peyresourde.
Stage 14
Pau > Superbagnères
The route today is modelled on the stage from the 1986 edition, which also took place on the 14th day of racing. The ascent to the Tourmalet via Luz-Saint-Sauveur (19km at 7.4%) is the least travelled by the Tour, as is the case for the route to the Col d’Aspin via Payolle (5km at 7.6%). However, this stage is essentially all about the race’s reunion with the ultra-demanding climb to Superbagnères (12.4km, 7.5%), where the changes in gradient is likely to trigger a pitched battle between the favourites.
Stage 15
Muret > Carcassonne
The road to Carcassonne often favours the sprinters, but 2,400 metres of vertical gain in less than 170 kilometres could encourage the breakaway specialists. The Côte de Saint-Ferréol on the road out of Revel and then the Pas du Sant (2.9km at 10%) could well provide them with the perfect opportunity to eliminate their rivals. After that, there’s 40 kilometres of gentle descent into the medieval city, with the possibility of a strong crosswind too!
Stage
Rest Day: Montpellier
Stage 16
Montpellier > Mont Ventoux
The unusual geographical configuration of the “Giant of Provence” often makes it the only difficulty of the day. The route is quite straightforward to begin with, crossing the departments of Hérault, Gard and Vaucluse. Here, the riders will reach the road where the contest between the favourites could become a demonstration. Between the village of Bédoin and the observatory overlooking the finish line there are 15.7km of ascent, averaging 8.7%... and chances to attack at absolutely every point.
Stage 17
Bollène > Valence
There’s no such thing as an absolutely flat stage on the roads of the Vaucluse and Drôme, but there’s definitely an opportunity here for the sprinters and that will mean the breakaway riders won’t get much room for manoeuvre. If the wind starts to blow, as is often the case in this area, and there’s an attempt to create echelons there could be a dramatic twist. There’ll be real tension at every change of direction over the final 50 kilometres.
