Stage
Rest Day: Montpellier
Stage 16
Montpellier > Mont Ventoux
The unusual geographical configuration of the “Giant of Provence” often makes it the only difficulty of the day. The route is quite straightforward to begin with, crossing the departments of Hérault, Gard and Vaucluse. Here, the riders will reach the road where the contest between the favourites could become a demonstration. Between the village of Bédoin and the observatory overlooking the finish line there are 15.7km of ascent, averaging 8.7%... and chances to attack at absolutely every point.
Stage 17
Bollène > Valence
There’s no such thing as an absolutely flat stage on the roads of the Vaucluse and Drôme, but there’s definitely an opportunity here for the sprinters and that will mean the breakaway riders won’t get much room for manoeuvre. If the wind starts to blow, as is often the case in this area, and there’s an attempt to create echelons there could be a dramatic twist. There’ll be real tension at every change of direction over the final 50 kilometres.
Stage 18
Vif > Col de la Loze
The stats don’t lie: this is the most demanding stage of the 2025 Tour, with 5,500 metres of vertical gain. Much of this total will come on the climbs to the Col du Glandon and then the Col de la Madeleine, where the riders will reach 2,000 metres for the first time today. Then they’ll hit the heights again above Courchevel to reach the Col de la Loze, tackling the pass for the first time from this flank. After passing through the altiport, the final four kilometres are on a cycle track where the gradient is just as irregular and almost as hard on the legs as the route taken in 2020 and 2023.
Stage 19
Albertville > La Plagne
The ultra-mountainous tone of this stage, which features five climbs, is amplified by its relative shortness. The first of those climbs, the Côte d’Héry-sur-Ugine, arrives around ten kilometres after the stage start. Thanks to the spicy nature of what’s gone before, the final 19.1-kilometre ascent to La Plagne will seem all the more interminable.
Stage 20
Nantua > Pontarlier
At this stage of the Tour, there’ll still be some in-form riders who haven’t yet managed to claim a victory bouquet. They’ll all be keen to get into the breakaway, but the selection process will be tough, thanks especially to the ascent of the Col de la Croix de la Serra. The hilly profile of the final third of the stage will give the strongest riders the chance to break away and finish solo or in a small group in the capital of absinthe.
Stage 21
Mantes-la-Ville > Paris Champs Elysées
A return to both tradition and to the Champs-Élysées... After Nice stepped in for the capital during the Olympics last summer, the Tour will return to Paris. And we’ll be celebrating the 50th anniversary of both the first finish on the Champs-Élysées and Bernard Thévenet’s first overall victory. That was in 1975. Happy anniversary!
