Overview

Our Denia early season training camp is a rewarding experience for experienced, performance-driven, competitive road cyclists who are eager to kick-start their season and achieve their racing goals.

Challenge yourself on some of Europe’s best tarmac; training on the same roads as numerous World Tour teams who also choose this magnificent region to prepare themselves for race season. You’ll build speed and endurance, but also form lasting connections with Thomson staff members and fellow cyclists who share a passion for the sport. At the end of each day relax in the 5-star Denia Marriot La Sella resort, the preferred hotel of so many World Tour pro teams.

Please note that this is a training camp designed for experienced, competitive road cyclists with a minimum FTP of 3.8 w/kg. The Thomson ride leaders (many of them ex-pros) will be managing the intensity of the training rides throughout the week to cater to riders with this minimum fitness level.

Itinerary Detail

Day 1

Distance

Elevation

Welcome to Dénia!

Your Training  Camp starts at Alicante Airport where our staff will meet you before the short transfer to your hotel in Denia.

After lunch, orientation meeting and bike build-up, you’ll head out for your first ride in Denia, up the magnificent climb to Port de Bérnia.

Day 2

Distance

Elevation

FTP test on the Coll de Rates

Today we have our first long ride, and like professional riders, the first thing to do on a training camp is an FTP test. We have the perfect place to do it – the Coll de Rates, a steady climb with the perfect length.

Furthermore, this climb is highly popular with the pros for all their specific workouts so don’t get too alarmed if someone comes flying by you, probably just another pro doing their FTP test!

Day 3

Distance

Elevation

Torch training on Coll de la Garga

After yesterday’s FTP test, we’ll know your training zones, so it’s time to start working!

The first part of the ride is along the coast, perfect to remove the lactic acid from yesterdays test! But don’t get too relaxed, this is a training camp after all. Your first real workout of the ride will come on the Coll de la Garga. The plan for today is to work on the Torch, maintaining low RPMs in Zone 3. Torch training refers to a specific type of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) exercise routine designed to help you burn fat and build muscle simultaneously. It stands for “Total Body Resistance Exercise with Cardiovascular Exercise”. Enjoy!

Day 4

Distance

Elevation

Active recovery

A key part of any training routine is rest and recovery, so today you’ll enjoy an active recovery ride – which essentially means a coffee ride. We’ll follow the example of the Spanish pros and enjoy a coffee accompanied by a few Spanish pastries – buen provecho!

Day 5

Distance

Elevation

Coll de Rates and Port de Tudons, Zone 3

After yesterday’s recovery ride, your batteries should be fully charged and ready for another challenging ride on the Costa Blanca.

Today’s objective is to work on endurance. It’s a long ride (157km) and we’ll also incorporate a few efforts in Zone 3 during the climbs of Coll de Rates and Port de Tudons.

Day 6

Distance

Elevation

Coll de Rates x2, VO2max and a bonus climb!

Today’s ride may be shorter in distance, but don’t let the shorter distance fool you. .

Spanish riders love ambushes, think of Alberto Contador constantly outsmarting his rivals with his well-placed ambushes. Today our ride leaders have a strategic ambush in place – but we can’t tell you exactly where it’s going to come in the ride – just be ready for it! Besides the ambush, the focus for today is to work in the red zone, targetting your V02max. This means you’ll be doing short, but intense efforts. You’ll repeat the efforts at the beginning and towards the end of the ride, on the same climb, allowing us to compare your numbers at these different points in the ride. Be ready for a demanding and rewarding ride today!

Day 7

Distance

Elevation

Vall d'Ebo

The last ride in Denia and an opportunity to enjoy a magnificent ride and since it’s the last day, leave it all on the road!

There are two main climbs on this route, the famous Vall d’Ebo and Port de Tollos, but with multiple “rollers” along the route, this is the typical legbreaker ride, perfect for the final day. Leave it all out there!

Day 8

Adios!

Our shuttle will drop you off at Alicante Airport.
