Overview

To quote the famous British writer DH Lawrence: “Sardinia is out of time and history. This land resembles no other place. Sardinia is something else. Enchanting spaces and distances to travel-nothing finished, nothing definitive. It is like freedom itself.”

For sure, the island has evolved since Lawrence published his book Sea and Sardinia in 1921, but it remains a magical island with vast, completely unspoilt mountain ranges, and of course the magnificent turquoise waters and white sandy beaches that line the 1800km of coastline.

Our trip features the dramatic east coast, through the Gennargentu and Supramonte mountain ranges.  Along the way we’ve included the top rides on the island, and of course, being Thomson, we’ve included a few “wee bumps” to keep you challenged. You’ll stay in some magnificent hotels, including the unique Su Gologone Experience hotel and enjoy Sardinia’s excellent local food and wines.

Join the best staff in the business for an epic week on one of the world’s most beautiful islands!

Tip: The EPIC TRANS and TRANS trips are fully interchangeable, so you can enjoy the classic TRANS route one day and switch to the EPIC the next, or vice versa. The two trips run side by side, with everyone staying in the same hotels, sharing the same staff, and having breakfasts and dinners together. The ONLY difference lies in your choice of daily route: TRANS is slightly shorter with less elevation, while EPIC offers a longer ride with more climbs.

Day 1

Distance

Welcome to Sardinia

Your trip starts at Olbia Airport where our staff will meet you before the transfer to our magnificent hotel located directly on the beach on Sardinia’s spectacular east coast.

After lunch, an orientation meeting and bike build-up, you’ll head out for your first ride in Sardinia. The numerous switchbacks and corners on the climb from Loceri to Lanusei provide stunning views of the Sardinian coast and a nice appetiser of what awaits on the days ahead.

Day 2

Distance

Elevation

The Supramonte Mountains

A magnificent ride today combining spectacular sea views and the dramatic landscapes of the Supramonte mountains.

The ride starts off with a 25km ride along the coast to the seaside town of Sant Maria Navarrese. In Santa Maria the climbing starts as you head inland though the quaint mountain village of Baunei and across the Baunei Supramonte plateau to Urzulei. After a short descent from Urzulei you’re soon back into climbing mode as you start the challenging but stunning climb through the highest peaks of the Supramonte to Talana. From Talana, enjoy the next 40km through forests of large pine trees before the final fun descent through the multiple switchbacks on the road from Lanusei back to the coast.

Day 3

Distance

Elevation

Perda 'e Liana

A brilliant ride into the mountainous interior of the island, past the unique Perda ‘e Liana rock formation, which is the entrance to the underworld according to local legends. Stunning views and completely traffic-free roads are the order of the day!

Be sure to enjoy the first 10km, as this is the only flat section of the entire ride. At the 10km mark, you’ll start the climb to Gairo Vecchio, a spooky ghost town that has been uninhabited for over 50 years since alluvial floods forced the villagers to abandon their homes. From Gairo Vecchio you’ll follow a single-lane road that winds its way towards Perda ‘e Liana, then through the Montarba forest before dropping out in Ussassai and a magnificent 25km descent back to the hotel.

Day 4

Distance

Elevation

Passo Ghenna Silana

Today you’ll leave behind the fantastic Corte Bianca hotel and start the journey northwards. Highlight of the day is the climb to the Passo Ghenna ‘e Silana, and the 30km descent off the other side.

The ride starts with the climb through Lanusei and continues on through Arzana and into the Gennargentu Mountains National Park. You’ll head back over Talana from the opposite side before dropping down to Urzulei and the start of the climb to the Passo Ghenna ‘e Silana. Enjoy the long descent before the short run in to the unique Su Gologono Experince Hotel.

Day 5

Distance

Elevation

Cala Gonone

Another spectacular ride combining mountains and a little stretch of shoreline. The first 45kms feature several short climbs over the typical traffic-free roads, before arriving in the village of Galtelli. After a short section through the antique cobbled streets of Galtelli, you’ll start the steep climb to Cancello. Next up is a short, steep climb over the final mountain range before the coast, followed by a wonderful descent into Cala Gonone. What goes down must come back up though, and you’re soon climbing out of Cala Gonone and heading back to the amazing Su Gologone hotel.

Day 6

Distance

Elevation

Sa Mela Fountain Road

A sensational ride today following the 40km mountain climb that leads to Siniscola from Lula. At 40km, it’s a long climb, but the grades are gentle allowing you to enjoy the incredible views offered all the way up this climb. The series of stunning climbs at the beginning of the ride and a wonderful descent down to our beachside hotel complete a sensational day on the bike!

Day 7

Distance

Elevation

Pedra Blanca

Your trip ends with a magnificent ride inland from our hotel in La Caletta.

You’ll start the ride by climbing the stunning final descent of yesterday’s ride to Sant’Anna. From Sant’Anna enjoy the typically traffic-free Sardinian roads before the final challenge of the trip, the climb to Pedra Blanca with its double-digit grades! A fantastic end to your epic journey across this magnificent island.
