Overview

Join Paraic and Claudia on a unique trip to Piedmont, Italy’s most famous wine region. From Piedmont you’ll continue to Emilia-Romagna and the magnificent city of Parma, before the final 3 days in the spectacular village of Bardi.

The trip starts in the famous Langhe vineyards with rides through iconic villages like La Morra, Monforte d’Alba, Novello and of course Barolo. The journey continues east across the foothills of the Apennines to Gavi, another famous Italian wine region. In Gavi, you’ll enjoy the unique experience of riding to the tiny village of Castellania, birthplace of Fausto Coppi, one of the greatest cyclists of all time. The village of Castellania, including the house where Coppi was born, has been transformed into a small museum dedicated to “Il Campionissimo”, and is a wonderful place to discover the life of this fascinating rider.

A rest day in the city of Parma is next on the agenda where Claudia will have arranged a tour of the city’s landmarks and of course some ample tasting of the local parma ham and and parmigiano-reggiano cheese, accompanied by a glass or two of the local wine.

From Parma, you’ll ride to a real hidden gem and one of our favorite destinations in the Apennines, the spectacular village of Bardi. Bardi will be your home for the next couple of days as the trip concludes with 2 stunning rides through the rolling hills and pristine scenery that surrounds Bardi.

Itinerary Detail

Day 1

Distance

Benvenuti in Italia!

Your trip starts at Milan Malpensa Airport where our staff will meet you before the transfer to your hotel.

After a brief orientation meeting, lunch and bike build-up, you’ll head out on your first ride in Italy. Our warm-up ride features a magnificent ride through the rolling hills and vineyards of the famous Langhe wine region, with a coffee stop in the medieval village of Neive, ranked one of Italy’s most beautiful villages.

Day 2

Distance

Elevation

Barolo wine region

The Barolo wine region is arguably the most famous DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) in Italy – and guess what, it’s located just 10km west of our hotel. So today you’ll enjoy a stunning ride through the Barolo vineyards, including famous villages like La Morra and Monforte d’Alba – and a coffee stop just outside the castle in the village of Barolo.

Day 3

Distance

From Barolo to Gavi

Your journey across Piedmont starts today as we leave behind the Barolo region and head for another famous Piedmont wine region, the Cortese di Gavi. We’ve designed another spectacular day on the bike, riding along the edge of the Apennine mountains, through vineyards and the  many beautiful villages that characterise Piedmont.

Day 4

Distance

Elevation

In the tire tracks of Fausto Coppi

Today’s ride features a journey into the golden age of Italian road cycling as you ride to the birthplace of the legendary Fausto Coppi. Following the same routes as the Granfondo La Fausto Coppi, the ride heads for the small village of Castellania where Fausto was born in 1919. The village has been transformed into a museum dedicated to Fausto and you’ll visit the small house where he was born. Many cycling fans rank him as the second greatest cyclist of all time, behind the great Eddy Merckx, but considering his career was interupted by the 2nd world war, some argue that he was the greatest of all time. Read his fascinating story on wikipedia here

Day 5

Rest day in Parma

After 4 consecutive days in the saddle, you’ll enjoy a well-earned rest today. After breakfast we’ll have a short drive to Parma where Claudia will have organised a tour of this magnificent city. The tour will no doubt include the option to indulge in 2 of the city’s beloved foods: prosciutto di parma, and parmigiano-reggiano cheese, of course washed down with a wee glass of wine – or two.

Day 6

Distance

Into the Apennines and the village of Bardi

After yesterday’s rest day in Parma, it’s time to get back in the saddle with a spectacular ride over the Apennine mountains to the beautiful village of Bardi, with it’s spectacular fortress dominating the skyline. Bardi sits at the top of a 2,000 ft hill so save the legs for the final 6 mile push.

Day 7

Distance

Parco Monte Moria

With absolutely no traffic, great roads and fantastic scenery, Bardi is a paradise for road cycling and has so many magnificent rides to choose from. Today we’ve chosen to follow the Arda River valley into the Monte Moria natural park to the north of Bardi. You’ll enjoy traffic-free roads, stunning mountain landscapes and quaint villages throughout the entire ride – and there are lots of options to add an extra climb or 2 if anyone has the desire to test their climbing legs.

Day 8

Distance

Passo Linguada & Passo Pianazze

Your trip ends with a classic Bardi ride over the Passo Linguada to the Nure River valley then back over the Passo Pianazze and the final short climb up to Bardi. Another stunning ride showcasing the incredible quality of rides in this corner of Emilia-Romagna. In the evening we’ll get together to celebrate a magnificent week of riding and camaraderie with a farewell toast and dinner celebration in the Due Spade restaurant in Bardi.
